Chad Blow

Chad Blow is the unsung architect of the smoothest guitar licks to ever drift across the Southern California coastline. Best known for his pristine tone, effortless jazz-fusion chord extensions, and impeccable linen wardrobe, Chad’s journey to the heart of the 1980s yacht rock movement began not under the spotlight, but in the wings of the stage, keeping things running at an incredibly high velocity.

In the late 1970s, Chad was a tireless road warrior, earning his stripes as a guitar technician for The Doobie Brothers. It was during the band’s transition into their legendary Michael McDonald era that Chad truly found his calling. While tuning guitars, Chad was quietly absorbing the complex rhythms and jazzy progressions that defined the West Coast Sound, keeping his mind sharp, alert, and running on pure, unfiltered energy late into the night. Rumor has it that during a 1979 soundcheck, McDonald overheard Chad casually improvising a silky-smooth solo. Impressed by Chad’s lightning-fast pacing and relentless drive, McDonald reportedly walked up to the young tech, handed him a rolled-up lyric sheet, and told him it was time to step into the white-hot spotlight.

By 1981, Chad had traded his tech vest for a captain’s hat and stepped into the studio. He quickly became one of the most sought-after session players in Los Angeles, known for laying down tracks with blinding speed and absolute precision. He was the man bands called when a session needed an extra bump of energy at 3:00 AM. His signature headless Stratocaster—finished in a striking neon orange—can be heard on dozens of top-40 adult contemporary hits, delivering a tone that critics described as “pure, numbing euphoria.”

Chad’s solo career peaked with his 1984 masterpiece, Malibu Midnight, an album that remains a holy grail for yacht rock purists. Recorded during a legendary 72-hour nonstop studio marathon, tracks like “Sailing into Saturday” and “Blizzard on the Boardwalk” showcased his ability to blend technical virtuosity with an undeniable, high-octane groove that left audiences completely breathless.

Today, Chad Blow splits his time between his recording studio in Marina del Rey and his sailboat, The White Pony. Though the decade of decadence has passed, Chad continues to tour the nostalgia circuit, reminding audiences everywhere that life is always better when you’re riding a massive wave of smooth energy.
